Resin art/painting is a unique painting style where you do not use typical brushes strokes, watercolour, acrylic or oil paints to create the artwork.

If you ever wondered “what is resin art?” the answer is more simple than you think. Resin art is created when a runny chemical called epoxy resin is combined with various colour pigments and additives to produce a blend of unique patterns and textures. The resin mixture gradually hardens (when mixed with a hardener) to a solid plastic as a chemical reaction between its components takes place.

Resin art is a highly versatile art form that allows for endless possibilities.

Resin is a durable and strong medium, leaving a high gloss, protective finish that allows for a variety of effects to be achieved in art. Epoxy resin is commonly used in art in a variety of ways sealing works like drawings, watercolour works, alcohol ink, mixed media, oil paintings, and photographs, creating a beautiful, high shine, ultra-glossy protective varnish.

What is the history behind resin art?

Surprisingly, resin art has been around for centuries. Nature’s resin, otherwise known as amber, is produced by trees and fossilizes to create a hard, transparent slab. Amber has been used for hundreds of years as decorative ornaments or pieces of jewellery.

The more modern version of resin is made artificially and is used for similar purposes. Epoxy resin was first discovered in the 1930s. Once people realised it could be used to adhere items together or preserve objects, it was patented as its own product. Soon after, epoxy resin made its way into the art realm where it has been used ever since.

What is Resin Made of?

Resin is a highly viscous liquid that is produced when trees bleed oils in response to injury. These oils are oxidised when exposed to air, which forms the thick, sticky fluid known as resin.

The use of natural resin dates back to ancient Greece where it was commonly used as a primitive form of chewing gum for fresh breath.

Resin art uses epoxy resin which is synthetically produced to mimic the desirable properties of natural resin. Epoxy resin consists of a two-part system of synthetic polymer resin and a hardener.

Once these components are combined, they undergo a chemical reaction which hardens the mixture to form a solid medium.
